Focusing on God Bible Verses & Benefits of Focus
Focusing on God through Bible verses is a great way to remind ourselves of truly what is important in our walk.
In a world with countless people, events, and responsibilities all vying for our attention, it can be hard to focus on what truly matters. Our minds are all too quick to wander to the things that distract us the most. Maybe a budding romance has been all we can think about. Or maybe work has been demanding all of our time and attention. Things like relationships and work can certainly be good; but they should not the center of our lives. We are called to fix our eyes upon God – to value Him and pursue Him above all else, even if it means leaving all these other things behind. There are many Bible verses that speak about focusing on God, but we will simply look at a few.
Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” What does it mean to set our affection on things above? It means that we prioritize the eternal glory of God over the fleeting things of earth. We have to focus on God’s will rather than ours, because His plans are much greater. It’s so easy to fall in love with all the “stuff” we accumulate in life; our money, our jobs, our cars and houses. Even non-material things like friendships or romantic relationships are considered worldly when compared to the things above. We must go through this life understanding that our happiness does not rest in these things. Our happiness comes from knowing the Creator of the universe; our joy is found in knowing that Jesus died for us and that one day we will be with Him in eternity.
Another powerful verse comes from Jesus Himself in Matthew 6:33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” In context of the prior verses, “all these things” refers to the things that we worry about as humans – food, water, clothing, shelter. Jesus isn’t saying that these things aren’t important; He is saying that these things are secondary compared to our need for Him. Ultimately, our greatest need is our need for salvation, to love and be loved by God. When we hold our relationship with Him in highest regard, everything else will follow suit. He will take care of us and provide for us, just as He has always done.
Finally, it is crucial to remember that the best way that we can focus on God is through scripture itself. When we read, study, and meditate on the Word of God, we set aside all the other things in our lives and simply enter into His presence. Through the Word, we discover more about ourselves and about God. We learn how to live as followers of Christ. And so it’s no surprise that there are so many verses and passages about focusing on God – because focusing on God is what we should all be seeking to do when we dive into scripture.
