The Da Vinci Code: To support, ignore, or stand up for Christ? Speaking on behalf of HIM E-mail
Monday, 29 May 2006
As Christians, we seem to be constantly battling against issues that require us to take stands based on our beliefs. Do we agree? Or do we not? Having a background in social work, I have always leaned towards respecting people’s beliefs – as long as they respected mine. However, I found myself shying away from topics I knew would end in either agreement or agreement to disagree.

Lately, I have revisited how I handled sensitive topics that cast Christian principles in a negative light. I have become more proud of my beliefs; I now feel a need to display my lifestyle, while maintaining a respectful attitude to opinions and beliefs that differ from mine.

When I first heard of The Da Vinci Code, like everyone else, I was eager to read the book. I have always maintained an open mind to different beliefs, although I always consciously reminded myself of how important it is to stand up for what I know in my heart to be right. When I read what the book was about, I immediately felt as though the wind was knocked out of me. This was a book that stood against everything I base my life upon: living for Christ and living as an example of Christ.

Although historians have been distorting historical facts for years, I was curious to see how the Christian community would respond to such a devastating and immoral tale of the one, true God we claim we serve as a nation.

When the film came to theatres I refused to see it. I was pleasantly surprised to see a groups of young Christians standing outside the movie theatres with signs proudly proclaiming their stand against the movie. We are in an age where being politically correct is portrayed as more important than standing up for what we believe to be true. I slowly passed the protesting groups, and held my thumbs up in approval.

As Christian believers, taking a stand for what we believe should not be questioned. I have come to realize that it isn’t about disrespect; it’s about attitude and what Christ would do if he were here.

So, I ask you this: what would Christ do if he were here, being accused of having an affair with an ill-famed woman? The answer lies within you and within the scriptures of the Bible. History tends to repeat itself and we have come full circle to our fellow countrymen persecuting him all over again.
