Gospel star Bryan Wilson makes comeback with autobiographical Father's Dat tune from “UNCLOUDY DAYS” CD Gospel Star Will Appear at Baltimore’s Reunion Choir Release Party Friday, June 16, 2006 @7:00 PM at Carter Memorial COGIC Church in Baltimore.
In 1994, a 12-year-old boy named Bryan Wilson rocked the gospel world and the Mississippi Children’s Choir with his stirring rendition of “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” The song, with dramatic high notes and vocal riffs, was such a big hit that Wilson was nicknamed the Boy Sparrow.
What followed were two more hit Malaco Records CDs that earned him Dove and Stellar award nominations. However, after high school, Wilson earned a B.A. degree and spent a year working towards his master’s of divinity degree at Princeton University.
Now, Wilson is back on the scene with two new songs on the Uncloudy Days CD project that features music by Mavis Staples, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and Andrae Crouch.
The project’s first single was Wilson’s autobiographical track, “Still, My Father.” He wrote the song about his absentee dad who he never met until he was ten years old. “Before then, he came around every few months or so to speak to my mother, but no one ever said that’s your father,” Wilson recalls. His father was a drug user, drinker and womanizer so there was little time in schedule for mentoring his son. Still, Wilson has forgiven his father and wrote the song for others who may experience the same issues.
The “Uncloudy Days” CD is a companion to Bil Carpenter’s 500+ page book, “Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia” (Backbeat Books), which profiles over 600 gospel artists dating from 1900 to the present. Mojo magazine calls it “the Bible” for gospel music fans.
Wilson make a special appearance at the CD release party for Baltimore’s Reunion Gospel Choir on Friday, June 16, 2006 @7:00 p.m. at the Carter Memorial COGIC Church, 745 West Fayette Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. The concert is free and open to the public.
